Chartering Explained: Voyage Charter vs Time Charter vs Bareboat

Voyage Charter

The shipowner carries cargo on an agreed route and quantity, bearing voyage costs (bunkers, port charges, and loading/discharging costs as allocated in the contract), with freight quoted per tonne. Suited to one-off cargo movements — the cargo owner locks in a single trip service.

Time Charter (TC)

The shipowner lets the vessel to a charterer for a period (months to years). The charterer handles scheduling and operating costs (bunkers, port charges, etc.), while the owner maintains the vessel and provides the crew. Suitable for long-term stable demand, giving the charterer scheduling flexibility.

Bareboat Charter (BC)

Only the hull is chartered; the charterer supplies the crew and bears all operating costs and responsibility, typically used for finance leases or special arrangements. High barriers and heavy responsibility — rarely used by ordinary cargo owners.

How to Choose

Single shipments favour voyage charters; stable cargo flows with scheduling flexibility favour time charters; financing or special needs may call for bareboat. Whichever route you take, work with a professional chartering broker to match positions, negotiate rates and draft contracts to control risk. Rongjuxiang offers both an owned fleet and chartering brokerage for one-stop matching.
